Alternate Side Parking Regulations Suspended in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill, Brooklyn Starting May 18 for Six to Eight Weeks as DOT Posts New, Reduced Street-Cleaning Restrictions Release # 09-020

Suspension is the first of three phases for neighborhoods in Community District 2

Effective Monday, May 18, 2009, Street Cleaning/Alternate Side Parking Regulations will be temporarily suspended in the Fort Greene and Clinton Hill sections of Brooklyn’s Community District 2 for approximately six to eight weeks as the Department of Transportation (DOT) installs approximately 2,000 signs with new, reduced regulations. In most cases, daytime residential street cleaning parking restrictions will be reduced from twice a week to just once a week to ease parking for local residents. On commercial corridors, some streets will now be cleaned more often and regulations will be better coordinated to help ensure some curbside parking for local shoppers. The new rules were established by the Department of Sanitation at the request of Community Board 2. Changes for the rest of the district will occur in two additional phases, which will be announced over the summer.

Street Cleaning Regulations will be suspended within the following borders from May 18 until further notice:

North: Flushing Avenue (included) from Navy Street to Classon Avenue.

East: Classon Avenue (included) from Flushing Avenue to Fulton Street.

South: Fulton Street (not included) from Classon Avenue to Flatbush Avenue.

West: Flatbush Avenue (not included) from Fulton Street to Myrtle Avenue;

Myrtle Avenue (included) from Flatbush Avenue to Navy Street; Navy Street

(not included) Myrtle Avenue to Flushing Avenue.

The new regulations will take effect once sign changes are complete in the entire area. The changes do not affect 8:00 am to 6:00 pm parking rules or meter regulations, or any other parking rules that are not street cleaning regulations.

The DOT will give advance notification before enforcement resumes, and the public is encouraged to check the DOT’s Web site at www.nyc.gov/dot and call 311 regularly.

Similar conversions and temporary suspensions of ASP rules will occur in the coming months in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO, and remaining neighborhoods within Community District 2, affecting approximately 4,000 additional signs.

Regulations were similarly converted last year in the Park Slope, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens and Red Hook neighborhoods in Brooklyn Community District 6. During that transition, DOT conducted a study, which found that the suspension of ASP regulations had minimal impact on traffic and parking conditions in the area.

For more information, please contact the Citizen Service Center at 311 or

visit the Department of Sanitation’s web site at www.nyc.gov/sanitation, or

contact Brooklyn Community Board 2 at (718) 596-5410 or CB2K@nyc.rr.com.

My wife went in for a touch up to her extended nails. The owner Tricialee Riley told her that the nail extensions needed to be replaced and that she would offer them at the removal and the new set at 50% off.

She asked my wife to come in yesterday and get her old extensions removed and also set up an appointment for today to put on the new ones.

Yesterday the lady who was removing them took an hour to remove them. So my wife paid 50% of the rate of 10$ and left.

Today morning the owner calls up and says that the removal took too long etc and now she will not offer the 50% discount.

When my wife told her that this is not an hourly rate job but a service provided and if her lady took an hour, she is not to be blamed for it.

The owner told her, to either pay full price today or cancel the appointment. My wife canceled the appointment. The money involved is not the issue here. Principle is.

To summarize

a) The owner of Polish Bar of Brooklyn did not tell my wife that you did not have the requisite experience and expertise to deal with her nail extensions. If you did not possess the technical know how, say so. Don’t lead her on a wild goose chase just to get her business.

b) If you agree to do a job, do it till the end. Don’t quit on the customer half way and tell them to find their own way after you screw up.

c) If you offer a discount, stick to it. The actual cost of the services is not the issue. The principles are.

The owner was obnoxious and for sure, my wife will never go to this place again.
As a note, my wife says that this place is way more expensive than its Manhattan equals.

And with that extra money you pay, you would at least hope to get a reasonable decent owner, who is interested in doing business and not shafting the customer.

An email pops in today from Reaghan Roper at MWW Group. It is a press release. This was in response to my post about FreshDirect [1] [2]. One of criticism was that FreshDirect was selective in which neighborhoods it delivers to.

And the press release continues to say

Leading Online Grocer Now Delivering to Residents in Bedford Stuyvesant, Crown Heights, Red Hook and More

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz Welcomes FreshDirect Delivery

LONG ISLAND CITY, NY – April 17, 2008 – FreshDirect, one of the nation’s leading online gourmet grocers and prepared food purveyors, announced today its plans to heed growing customer demand and expand its delivery services to reach the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Bedford Stuyvesant (“Bed Stuy”), Crown Heights, Red Hook and more. The new delivery areas are now open for delivery service, giving residents a whole new way to shop for the best in fresh produce, competitively priced groceries, and mouthwatering prepared food.

Communities in these neighborhoods can now choose from FreshDirect’s extensive product offering, featuring fresh foods and groceries, bulk items, local and organic produce and chef-prepared 4-Minute and Ready-to-Cook Meals. These neighborhoods add to a growing number of Brooklyn communities currently serviced by FreshDirect. In addition to Brooklyn, FreshDirect successfully operates throughout Manhattan and Queens as well as select areas in Staten Island, Westchester, Nassau County, and New Jersey.

It took a long long time for FreshDirect to correct its “social” injustice. Well better late than never. Welcome FD to BS….

Just this week NYC announced that crime is down to a record low in 17 years and how the city has evolved into a really safe city. Now that statement has to be taken with a pinch of salt. Yes murders and killings may be down but regular vandalism is not. Ask any car owning resident of Clinton Hill or Fort Greene ! Ok, so no more digression.

However this story on Gowanus Canal, shows us another seedier, murkier, darker underside of the justice system and the police in general. A woman was arrested because there was a warrant out for her for having a dog unleashed on the road. She sends in a detailed account

because she was horrified at the conditions at the Brooklyn Central Booking on Schermerhorn Street between Smith and Boerum Place.

The R word comes up in her account and frankly anyone who has lived in NYC has been either a victim or a witness to racial profiling over the years.

And more so in Brooklyn.

There seemed to be a giant amount of racial profiling going on — alot of woman in the cell were just picked up wrongly and booked for supposed violations. (Open bottle of alcohol.) It seemed that they wanted to put as many black folk in the system as possible. I grew up in brooklyn in the 70s . My dad grew up here. I am not a naive, knucklehead from a transferred suburban bubble. This “pick up anyone for anything and process them for it” as my lawyer informed me, was a Guiliani mandate. It is racist. It has divided this city and it is making this place a plasticized suburb that I don’t think I have the heart to remain in. It is disturbing to watch these rich kids prance around Smith Street, when 2 blocks away, there is a cell where you are held without communication, water, food and logic. The judge threw my case out in 2 seconds and was visibly irritated that i was locked up for a day for an offleash summons.

When I left the building 25 hours later, I realized that just one block away, there are $3 million townhouses. PS: the 16 year old that was in the cell for 2 and a half days…her case was also dismissed.

The contrast between the ugliness inside and privilege outside will be even stronger if the city goes ahead with plans to reopen the bigger jail complex and add luxe condos and retail.

Moral of the story is: If you ever have had to go to court for even the smallest incident, make sure that the follow up was thorough and there were no loose ends. It may otherwise land you in jail.

“Cambo on my mind” is a series of images taken while visiting my brother in Cambodia the summer of 2006. My brother, Nader Ebrahimi, has been a huge influence in my life. My move from San Francisco to New York in 1998 was due in part to my brother who was living and working as an artist in New York City at the time. Nader grew tired of New York and moved to Spain in 2003. Three years later, he traveled to Cambodia to shoot a job on the sex slave trade. Learning how fragile the lives of poor young children where in Cambodia is what made my brother finally move out to Phnom Phen after just four months in Barcelona, where he just couldn’t get Cambo off his mind.

In February 2006, my brother began volunteering at an orphanage in Phnom Phen, Cambodia in order to teach English, Photography, and Painting. In a very short time, Nader became very close to the kids yet he had become suspicious about the management of the orphanage. Many of his concerns were valid which meant that he began to spend more time at the orphanage. Due to systems in Phnom Phen, there was very little my brother could do to ensure the well-being of the children which led to a great deal of frustration. Nader met Amjad and Fauzia, a couple who had recently lost their daughter Aziza at the young age of ten.

In 2003, they founded The Aziza Foundation in an effort to support the neediest of children as well as those who can facilitate a better life for them. While volunteering at the orphanage, they approached Nader directly about managing the foundation’s funds to help the children in the orphanage. My brother felt that this could be the solution to his angst; however, he declined because he did not have the resources or support to manage funds at that time. The couple returned to Michigan yet stayed in contact with my brother. After a couple of months Nader came up with the idea of starting something from scratch. Nader pitched the idea of Aziza’s Place and they agreed.

Since then Nader committed to be totally involved with every aspect of Aziza’s Place. Aziza’s place opened in Phnom Phen on February 14th 2007. My visit with my brother and the orphanage has made a huge impact on me. These portraits are illustrations of my interactions with the children. It took me one week until I felt comfortable photographing them. But in no time, the children were setting up shots like the one of Sophan wearing my sunglasses. Some of the children at the original orphanage have been transferred to Aziza’s Place where my brother cares for them.
